One Of The Largest Diamonds Ever Has Been Found

By  |

The world’s second biggest diamond has been discovered – beaten only in size by the Cullinan Diamond, which was found in 1905 in South Africa.

The Lesedi la Rona was discovered last year and is three billion years old, the size of a tennis ball and a staggering 1108 carats.

Discovered last November in the Karowe mine in Botswana, which is owned by Lucara Diamond Corp, the diamond has been described as a “once in a lifetime discovery”.

The diamond will go on display in London this weekend, ahead of its auction when it is expected to go for a world record breaking £50 million.

The Cullinan diamond was discovered over 100 years ago and part of the precious gem now makes up some of the crown jewels.

No other diamond has been found that matches the size and quality of the Cullinan diamond until now. The Lesedi la Rona, fittingly translates to ‘our light’ in the Twsana language.

Reports have suggested that the Lesedi la Rona could yield the largest top-quality diamond that has ever been cut and polished.
